"The report comes just a week before the 30th U.N. Climate Change Conference in Brazil, where world leaders, scientists and organizations will gather to focus on the implementation of the 2015 Paris climate agreement and how to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Exceeding that 1.5-degree increase, which U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres warns is now "inevitable," is expected to lead to increasingly frequent and dangerous weather events like heat waves, droughts, wildfires and flooding."
"The latest report breaks down the different ways that the climate is changing the planet and flags the best strategies to mitigate the damage. First, the big one: The World Meteorological Organization reported earlier this year that 2024 was the warmest year on record. According to the same organization, the past 10 years, 2015 to 2024, are the 10 warmest years on record."
2024 was the warmest year on record and may have been the warmest in at least 125,000 years. Twenty-two of Earth's 34 vital signs, including greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean acidity, and ice mass, are showing severe warning signals. The years 2015–2024 are the ten warmest years on record. Exceeding a 1.5°C global increase is becoming increasingly likely and will drive more frequent, dangerous heat waves, droughts, wildfires, and flooding. Many of these changes and challenges are already visible in California. Highlighted mitigation pathways can reduce future impacts and quantify current and projected consequences.
