"Almost 40 years to the date that the City of Santa Cruz and other coastal cities voted against oil rigging off their coast, the fight against proposed federal drilling is starting again. If put into place, the California Coast could be open to oil and gas leasing as soon as 2027. The Trump Administration is pursuing plans to bypass marine sanctuary protections and expand offshore oil and gas drilling along the California coast, including near the Golden Gate, off Sonoma County and within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Documents obtained by the Houston Chronicle describe efforts to pursue offshore drilling and seabed leasing. Congressman Jimmy Panetta warned the plan could review environmental requirements and cancel public input, citing Interior Department language that "all options are on the table." Coastal leaders and organizations, including Santa Cruz officials and Save Our Shores, are mobilizing legal and political responses. If implemented, leases could appear as early as 2027.
