King County Metro began deploying Gillig Low Floor battery-electric buses in south King County on 2 February. Gillig will supply as many as 89 buses under a new five-year contract with an option to purchase up to 306 zero-emission vehicles, following a March 2024 award. Mid-2023 federal funding of $33.5 million supports zero-emission bus acquisitions. The 40-foot Gillig buses feature larger battery packs, an estimated 240–280 mile range, and capacity for up to 69 passengers. Charging operations at Tukwila Base will start in spring, with the facility planned to support up to 120 battery-electric buses. The buses include newly designed operator safety partitions with reinforced metal, sliding glass, and polycarbonate panels.
