"More than three-quarters (78%) of UK consumers are of the view that new datacentres should only be built if the developers commit to powering them with renewable energy sources, according to a poll commissioned by German non-profit Beyond Fossil Fuels. The survey, which featured responses from more than 1,000 UK citizens, was carried out by market research company Savanta, with support from environmental charity Global Action Plan."
"Specifically, its findings revealed that respondents are opposed to more datacentres being built in the UK because of concerns about the impact this will have on fossil fuel usage and domestic water supplies. With this in mind, 77% of respondents said they would only support the building of further datacentres if they are backed by the dual creation of additional renewable energy sources that can power them."
A poll of more than 1,000 UK citizens found 78% believe new datacentres should only be built if developers commit to renewable energy. Respondents expressed opposition to additional datacentres due to concerns about increased fossil fuel use and impacts on domestic water supplies. Seventy-seven percent said they would support further datacentre construction only if additional renewable energy sources are created to power them. Seventy percent said a local datacentre would raise concerns about household water supply. UK citizens showed lower awareness of datacentres compared with Ireland, Germany, Spain and Switzerland. The UK government has pursued policies to expand the datacentre industry since July 2024.
