"Having the Trump administration actively intervening in the market to stop the phase-out of fossil fuels is very frustrating, it's beyond what you'd expect a government to do, Ralph Regenvanu, Vanuatu's minister for climate change adaption, said. It's going to have a huge harmful effect on the world and future generations."
"The resolution to fulfill the opinion issued by the ICJ is non-binding but could pose a major threat to US industry, the Trump administration said in guidance to American embassies and consulates last month. President Trump has delivered a very clear message: that the UN and many nations of the world have gone wildly off track, exaggerating climate change into the world's greatest threat."
Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation threatened by climate change, led efforts to advance a UN resolution based on an International Court of Justice ruling that countries could face reparations for failing to address climate crisis. The Trump administration actively opposed this resolution, claiming it posed threats to US industry and arguing that climate change has been exaggerated. Facing pressure from the US, Saudi Arabia, and Russia—major fossil fuel producers—Vanuatu removed key sections from its proposal, including provisions requiring countries to submit registries documenting climate-related losses and damages such as storms, floods, and droughts. Despite these concessions, Vanuatu proceeded with a weakened version for a UN vote later that month.
