Microsoft 365 pauses Copilot creep after admins cry foul
"This app provides a centralized entry point for accessing Copilot experiences and AI-powered capabilities across Microsoft 365. This change simplifies access to Copilot and ensures users can easily discover and engage with productivity-enhancing features."
"Making it opt-out by default increased the administrative workload and forced IT leaders to make decisions and set policies based on Redmond's whims rather than a corporate schedule. The automatic deployment was designed to encourage adoption of Microsoft 365 Copilot, yet it is clear from social media posts that not all users welcomed the assistant's arrival."
Microsoft has temporarily halted its plan to automatically install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on users' devices. Originally scheduled for early October, the rollout was delayed to December 2025 and is now paused indefinitely. The app was designed to provide centralized access to Copilot experiences and AI-powered capabilities across Microsoft 365 for desktop client users. Existing installations remain unaffected, and European Economic Area customers were already excluded. Administrators can still deploy the app through alternative methods. The pause reflects negative reactions from commercial customers who objected to the opt-out default approach, which increased administrative workload and forced IT leaders to manage deployment based on Microsoft's timeline rather than corporate schedules.
