"Historically, Rocky has been used as a name for boys. It had its first wave of popularity in the 1950s when boxer Rocky Marciano became the world heavyweight champion, naming expert Laura Wattenberg tells TODAY.com. Marciano's career inspired Sylvester Stallone, who introduced his iconic Rocky Balboa character in 1976. The name had a second wave of popularity from the mid-1970s until 1988, sustained in part by the release of "Rocky" sequels every few years."
""Rocky is traditionally a nickname," says Wattenberg. "Marciano's given name was Rocco, and Balboa was officially Robert." Though Rocky dropped in the Social Security Administration's baby name rankings after the 1980s, it took a huge leap as a boy name in the last few years, from #888 on the list in 2023 to #568 in 2025. Even so, the name has never fallen into the dreaded category of "too popular." At the height of its use in 1955, it was only #240."
"According to Wattenberg, Rocky is one of the first names from the 1950s mounting a comeback. "The name's tough, energetic style is a big draw today, and it has risen along with other assertive nicknames like Ace, Hawk and Duke." In 2023, Kourtney Kardashian Barker and Travis Barker named their son Rocky Thirteen Barker, due in part to Barker's love for the "Rocky" movies."
"The name Rocky (or Rocki) has been virtually unheard of for girls, but Rihanna is bringing it into our collective consciousness. Among BabyCenter parents, the name Rocky for girls has climbed 66 spots in 2026 alone. "It fits in with a growing trend toward boyish nicknames like Stevie and Charlie for girls," Wattenberg says, noting that Rocky/Rocki can also be a nickname for Raquel or Rachel."
Rocky originated as a nickname and was historically used for boys. Popularity rose in the 1950s after boxer Rocky Marciano became world heavyweight champion, and it gained further momentum through the 1976 Rocky Balboa character and later film sequels. The name declined in official rankings after the 1980s but has increased in recent years, moving from #888 in 2023 to #568 in 2025. Rocky has not reached “too popular” levels, peaking at #240 in 1955. Rocky is now appearing for girls, with Rihanna’s daughter Rocki and a broader trend toward boyish nicknames for girls.
