Andre Is an Idiot review a riotously funny, painfully honest film about facing death
"But most of the film consists of Ricciardi fighting against the dying of the light, recounting the discomfort of recovering from chemo (years of hangovers proved useful training, he says), the ridiculous indignities of radiotherapy and other treatments, weird side-effects such as eyelashes growing longer than usual, inept bedside manners from medical professionals, and the administrative screw-ups that punctuate the process."
"With assistance from director Tony Benna and a film crew, Ricciardi goes on a mission to create, among other goals, an unconventional public service announcement in the form of this film to persuade (American) viewers not to be idiots like him and get colonoscopies whenever possible after the age of 45. (In the UK, the procedure isn't automatically offered by the NHS, although home faecal immunochemical tests are recommended every couple of years after a certain age.)"
San Francisco resident Andre Ricciardi, a witty former advertising executive, discovered stage four colon cancer in his early 50s after passing up a colonoscopy. He collaborates with director Tony Benna and a film crew to produce an unconventional public service announcement aimed at persuading Americans over 45 to get colonoscopies. The film records his treatment journey, including chemotherapy recovery, radiotherapy indignities, strange side-effects like unusually long eyelashes, and administrative and bedside-manner failures. He enlists former agency colleagues for a tongue-in-cheek PSA using fruit and everyday objects. Ricciardi consistently uses humor as a defense while confronting mortality and advocating screening.
