Andy Serkis explains Aragorn's name change in LOTR prequel after Mortensen recast
"That's where he is at this particular part of the journey. He wouldn't think of himself as Aragorn, son of Arathon, at this part of the journey. He's living in the wilderness. He's a doomed lone ranger."
"I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise."
"We are thrilled that Jamie's doing it. I mean, we're, you know, we're absolutely thrilled. And, by the way, so is Viggo."
Andy Serkis, directing The Hunt for Gollum, explained why Jamie Dornan's version of Aragorn is credited as 'Strider' rather than by his full name. The character change reflects an earlier point in Aragorn's story when he hasn't yet embraced his royal identity and lives as a solitary figure in the wilderness. Viggo Mortensen, who originally played Aragorn in Peter Jackson's trilogy, is not returning for the new film but has reportedly approved of Dornan's casting. Mortensen previously expressed openness to reprising the role if it suited his current age, but ultimately supports the new direction.
