Director James Gunn's dog, Ozu, inspired the character Krypto in his new Superman film. Ozu, who had a troubled past with many other dogs before being adopted, influenced Gunn's storytelling around the emotional connection between Superman and his dog. Gunn recalled the challenges of Ozu's initial behavior, which led to the realization of Krypto's character traits. The film features both digital and real dogs to create Krypto's on-screen presence, emphasizing the unique bond between pets and their owners.
That's the thing that upsets him: The dog is scared. And we've only seen the dog give him grief. I think it's really important that Superman is tuned into his own sense of compassion in that way.
It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?' - and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.
Every time he sees himself come onscreen, he tries to act tough, but he starts barking and whining, and then runs around the house and looks for me.
