Oana Martisca, a Romanian-born filmmaker based in Miami, spent two years chronicling the state of journalism and interviewed numerous reporters and editors. The documentary News Without a Newsroom premiered at the Miami Film Festival and won more than ten awards globally. The film links dwindling attention spans, changing media business models, and rapid technological change to the recasting of news and democracy. The decline of local news unfolded over a generation and likely requires a generation to recover. Nonprofit news and experimentation are proposed responses, and media literacy is highlighted as essential to resisting disinformation.
