To Honor Those Lost at Camp Mystic, I Made the Owner's Signature Cookies
Briefly

In central Texas, communities are experiencing ongoing grief from the July 4 floods, impacting many families. As families cope with loss, they find meaning by supporting each other. A symbol of connection is Camp Mystic's Tweety Cookies, which are made and shared in heartfelt gestures. Former campers and counselors cherish these cookies, made lovingly by camp owner Tweety Eastland. They serve as a comforting treat during hard times, representing cherished memories and community bonds, and are often made in honor of lost loved ones or to support first responders.
"It just made you feel good to get them," says Strong, explaining that they were always made by hand in Tweety's home kitchen and given only for special reasons, like winning the clean cabin inspection or to comfort a homesick girl. "That's why it was such a treat. It was one batch and Tweety made them with love ... It's such a little thing, but these girls just treat it like it's gold."
One bright spot for me in covering these stories has been hearing about Camp Mystic's Tweety Cookies, as beloved as they are iconic.
