Far-right win 'historic' victory in French parliament
"France's foreign policy is not made by resolutions in Parliament. This does not prevent us from respecting this vote."
"Earlier, his Minister for Relations with Parliament, Laurent Panifous, had told AFP that he did not understand why the Horizons MPs had chosen to "give support" to Rassemblement National."
"At the Assemblée nationale, a triumphant Marine Le Pen welcomed a "day that can be described as historic" for her party."
"Speaking later on France 2 TV, party president Jordan Bardella called on Emmanuel Macron to "take note" of this non-binding vote "and to break up the immigration pathways that these Algerians have"."
The Assemblée nationale approved an RN-sponsored bill by 185 votes to 184, the first time a far-right-proposed bill has passed Parliament. The bill formally condemns the 1968 treaty between France and Algeria that grants Algerian citizens eased immigration pathways, including stays over 90 days and accelerated access to 10-year residency cards. Both halves of Les Républicains and the Horizons party backed the measure, while much of the Macronist centre abstained. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said foreign policy is not made by parliamentary resolutions but that the government respects the vote. Rassemblement National leaders hailed the result and urged changes to Algerian immigration pathways, and Franco-Algerian relations remain tense over immigration and visa restrictions.
