Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte filed a defamation lawsuit against US podcaster Candace Owens, claiming she made false statements about their identities and relationship. The Macrons allege Owens spread damaging lies, such as Brigitte being born a man and claims of CIA mind control in Macron's election. They seek a jury trial and punitive damages after Owens ignored requests to retract her statements. The Macrons' lawyer described the situation as a clear-cut case of defamation, aimed at causing harm and gaining attention for Owens.
"Owens' campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety."
"If ever there was a clear-cut case of defamation, this is it," said Tom Clare, a lawyer for the Macrons.
"Owens both promoted and expanded on those falsehoods and invented new ones, all designed to cause maximum harm to the Macrons and maximize attention and financial gain for herself."
The Macrons seek a jury trial and unspecified punitive damages in the defamation lawsuit against Candace Owens.
