Germany allows Taliban envoys to facilitate deportations DW 07/21/2025
Briefly

Germany has permitted two envoys from Afghanistan's Taliban regime to enter the country, the first such entry since the Taliban took power in 2021. This action aims to support deportations of Afghan migrants, following the deportation of 81 Afghans with failed asylum claims. Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that, despite technical contacts for deportations, there will be no formal recognition of the Taliban. Afghan diplomatic representations in Germany continue under officials appointed before the Taliban's return, with current staff reportedly overworked.
Germany has allowed two envoys from Afghanistan's ruling Taliban regime to enter the country for the first time since the Taliban seized power in 2021.
The measure was approved to facilitate further deportations of Afghan migrants after 81 Afghans were deported with failed asylum claims and criminal convictions.
Despite allowing the envoys to work in Germany, Chancellor Maers insists there will be no formal diplomatic recognition of the Taliban government.
The Afghan diplomatic representations in Germany are still headed by officials accredited prior to the Taliban takeover, as confirmed by the German Foreign Office.
