"In principle, we should stick with this mechanism. The automatic system functions better than it did pre-2014, when lawmakers got to set their own raises at a certain amount of money."
"Lawmakers earn enough and should respect the situation of ordinary Germans. Fifty-eight percent of German households reported that they are currently in saving-mode, with costs of basics like coffee and eggs increased by at least 14% compared to 2020."
German lawmakers are set to receive automatic pay increases in July as part of a long-standing mechanism for public servants to keep pace with inflation. The SPD and Left Party oppose the raises given current economic hardship, citing 2.9% inflation in April 2026 and significant price increases in essentials like coffee, eggs, heating oil, and fuels. Fifty-eight percent of German households report being in saving-mode. The CDU argues the automatic system should proceed as planned, with parliamentary leader Jens Spahn stating it functions better than the pre-2014 system where lawmakers set their own raises. Bundestag members' base salaries will increase from 11,833 to 12,330 euros monthly.
