Germany's domestic intelligence service has officially recognized the far-right party Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) as a confirmed rightwing extremist force. This allows authorities to enhance monitoring measures due to concerns that the party's ethnic-based understanding of German identity threatens democratic values. The classification follows criticism around the AfD's anti-immigrant stance, and calls to legally ban it are increasing. The party secured over 20% of the vote in the February elections, leading to mounting opposition fears regarding its influence on German democracy.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution noted that the AfD's understanding of German identity is incompatible with the free democratic order set out in the constitution.
Authorities can now intensify surveillance measures against the AfD, including monitoring its communications and activities, as it has been classified as an extremist force.
