The American Association of University Professors reports that many colleges lack faculty involvement in AI adoption decisions. While 90% of surveyed faculty acknowledged AI integration, 71% noted that administrators dominate discussions without gathering substantial input from faculty or students. This has led to inadequate policies regarding AI use. The report calls for stronger shared governance mechanisms to ensure faculty agency in AI implementation, which is essential for maintaining effective teaching and learning environments in higher education.
Many colleges and universities currently have no meaningful shared governance mechanisms around technology. The explosion of AI has highlighted the need for such mechanisms among faculty members at individual institutions and across the higher education workforce.
Although 90 percent of the 500 AAUP members who responded to the survey last December said their institutions are integrating AI into teaching and research, 71 percent said administrators overwhelmingly lead conversations about introducing AI into research, teaching, policy and professional development.
