MacKenzie Scott Gifts $50M to Virginia State University
"Ms. Scott's generosity and trust in our mission will change the trajectory of Virginia State University for generations to come."
"Her investment allows us to continue to build upon our legacy of excellence and expand our reach to more students who deserve access to a world-class education."
MacKenzie Scott donated $50 million to Virginia State University, marking the largest individual gift in the university's 143-year history. The donation follows a $30 million contribution to the same institution in 2020 that formed part of a broader $4.2 billion effort to support underfunded organizations. The funding is expected to enable expansion of programs, strengthen the university's legacy of excellence, and increase access to world-class education for more students. Scott has concentrated philanthropic efforts on minority-serving higher education institutions and recently gave $63 million to Morgan State University. Scott signed the Giving Pledge in 2019 to give away at least half her wealth.
