"We understand that this adjustment may raise questions, and we want to assure you that it will not affect any student's ability to successfully progress through the MSW program or meet graduation requirements on time."
"Yesterday I was told that the class I'm scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum," Dettlaff wrote. "This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it's like in Tex"
University of Houston removed a previously required Master of Social Work class that teaches societal power imbalances, racial prejudice, and social justice. Students in the Graduate College of Social Work were notified on Oct. 10 by an email from three student affairs officials stating the course will not be offered and that the change will not affect students' ability to progress or graduate on time. The email gave no further explanation, and university spokespeople provided no additional information. The action aligns with statewide reviews and censorship efforts related to gender identity and race amid implementation of Texas Senate Bill 37. Professor Alan Dettlaff said the required class was cut without faculty discussion or vote.
