Intact 17th c. storage barrels found in Norway
"The barrels were made of oak with bands of wood wrapped around the circumference. Those slim bands are now as soft as cheese, indicating their age and preservation state."
"The fact that the barrels are buried may indicate that they were used for safe and frost-free storage of finished slaked lime, before it was mixed with other materials."
Three intact wooden storage barrels and a large wood rammer from the 17th century were found in Skien, Norway, preserved for 400 years. Skien, one of eight medieval towns in Norway, was a trading post founded in the 9th century. The excavation, the largest since the 1970s, revealed the barrels made of oak with soft wood bands. They were untouched by historical fires and buried in lime, suggesting they were used for safe storage of slaked lime before mixing with other materials.
