"We've seen a lot of grins on their faces. Even if it's unexpected, we gave them a reason to groan today. That makes me kind of warm inside."
"It just makes you feel good. Aaron said it before, people who didn't expect something like this, then we give them a joke and it's like, oh, they smiled and they got a little something from it. And I think it's important in current times. It's very stressful in a lot of ways these days. But we're happy to just kind of make it a little bit brighter."
Aaron Schwartzbaum and Mylin Batipps run It's Always Punny in Philadelphia, the city's first and only wordplay group. The group's signature events are pun-offs held at Helium Comedy Club on Samson Street. The duo also performs on the street, serenading passers-by with bespoke jokes and bad puns. Aaron started pun-offs in Washington, D.C. and has fostered the growing pun community in Philadelphia since 2022. Mylin is a former pun-off winner who helps run the grassroots organization. The performances aim to give people laughs, groans, and small moments of brightness. The next pun-off, It's Always Punny in Philly: Jawn of the Dead, is on November 1.
