Seth Hernandez, a senior pitcher at Corona High School, was recently named Gatorade's national baseball player of the year, following his recognition as state player of the year. The honor was revealed during an unexpected event, surprising Hernandez when he was greeted by former major leaguer Dexter Fowler during a team photo opportunity. After transferring from homeschooling, Hernandez excelled this season with a remarkable 9-1 record, 0.39 ERA, and 105 strikeouts in just over 53 innings, establishing himself as a leading prospect for the upcoming MLB draft.
Hernandez joined Corona last season after two years of being home schooled, quickly developing into the top high school pitching prospect available in next month's MLB draft.
Super surprised, he said after a presentation where coach Andy Wise told him he'd take a team photo, only to find former major leaguer Dexter Fowler with his award.
