Carlos Delgado, chef at Blagden Alley’s Peruvian restaurants Causa and Amazonia, received the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic award at the James Beard ceremony in Chicago. Delgado, who emigrated from Lima in the early 2000s, expressed how this achievement embodies the immigrant experience. Despite challenges, Causa and Amazonia launched in May 2022 and quickly gained acclaim, becoming Washingtonian's top restaurant and earning a Michelin star. While DC saw some losses in other categories, Delgado's recognition underscores the city's culinary talent and immigrant stories. Meanwhile, other major awards highlighted successes in food media and cookbook publishing.
"This whole thing is an immigrant dream, an immigrant story" Delgado said. "I migrated here in 2001 or 2002, and this is a dream of mine since I was a little kid."
Delgado noted that Causa and its more casual upstairs bar Amazonia, took three and a half years to get off the ground before it debuted in May 2022, and almost didn't open at all.
