"really hard going in a locker room where you're not welcome, and there's really not a clear space that I should be going to."
"We're not trying to get into women's spaces to be perverts."
"Know that there are people in your community who are here for you and care about you."
Lia Smith, 21, a Middlebury College senior and member of the class of 2026, was found dead by suicide in a field near The Knoll on October 23. Smith had been reported missing five days earlier and was located after a large-scale search that involved the FBI. Smith was a double major in computer science and statistics from Woodside, California, and had competed for Middlebury's Women's Swimming and Diving team, placing fifth off the 3-meter board as a freshman in 2022–2023. Smith later took a break from diving, citing difficulties competing as a trans student-athlete, including quarterly hormone checks and challenges with locker room access. Smith spoke at a February protest forum following an executive order calling for a ban on trans athletes in women's sports and offered support to others facing discrimination.
