George Strus developed a love for theater after auditioning for Seussical the Musical at a local YMCA, which led them to engage deeply with cast albums and attend Broadway shows. Strus, who is trans and non-binary, founded Breaking the Binary Theatre in July 2022 to support transgender, non-binary, and Two-Spirit+ artists. The theater prioritizes collaboration and flexibility, meeting virtually to adapt to community needs rather than maintaining a formal space. Strus emphasizes the transformative impact of the BTB community on personal and societal understanding of freedom.
The BTB community and transness has been life changing. The community I've met through BTB has shaped me as a human, solidifying my personal value system.
BTB Theatre is one of the only theatrical spaces created for and run by gender-expansive artists, onboard employees throughout the year according to the organization's needs.
I began checking out cast albums from the library, used my minimum wage job in high school to pay for cheap Broadway tickets, which ignited my love for theater.
BTB Theatre prefers to stay nimble in response to the community's varying needs, meeting virtually and collaborating around specific projects without a formal theater space.
