Dick Cheney died at age 84 from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. He served in Congress under Reagan, as White House chief of staff under Ford, as secretary of defense under George H.W. Bush, and as vice president under George W. Bush. Cheney helped shape post‑9/11 defense policy, directing the Afghanistan response and supporting the 2003 Iraq invasion based on faulty claims of weapons of mass destruction. Cheney defended the use of harsh interrogation on detainees and later said he would do it again. Cheney had multiple heart attacks and supported his lesbian daughter while advocating broad freedom in relationships.
