Fran Kirby recently defended the right of LGBTQ+ footballers to maintain their privacy about their sexuality, especially ahead of the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro. In her interview, she acknowledged the unique and inclusive environment of women's football compared to men's, but highlighted the misconceptions that often surround female players' sexuality. Kirby underscored that while some gamers may choose to be open about their relationships, those who prefer to keep their personal lives private deserve respect. She emphasized that players are human beings with families and personal lives beyond the pitch.
If someone is willing to be open about who they are, what they represent and who they are dating, then I think that's absolutely fair. And I think if someone decides to not share that information, I think it should be respected.
Sometimes we need to take a step back and realise that [women football players] are human beings, and first and foremost they have a family, they have partners, they have kids.
