Jonathan Groff and Gavin Creel dated in 2009 and had limited contact in subsequent years. Groff publicly recalled coming out in 2009 after attending the March on Washington with Creel, inspired by Creel holding a bullhorn. A June 2024 interview in which Groff credited Creel prompted a text from Creel acknowledging their mutual importance. Groff and Creel messaged up until the Tony Awards night when Groff won Best Actor in a Musical; Creel sent congratulations, and that exchange was their final interaction. Gavin Creel died of cancer on September 24, 2024.
