"There's so much comedy that's not funny. I don't go to comedy that often, but I would say 80 per cent of the time I do, I am booing from the crowd,"
"I think that it's possible to be funny and not make fun of disabled people or non-white people or trans people. These comedians are lazy - like really f**king lazy, and it's not funny."
"I don't like when people are like, 'Oh, come on, have a good sense of humor.' I'm like, 'No. Have a better sense of humour. This is stupid.'"
Lucy Dacus, a queer musician and Boygenius member, criticized comedy that mocks disabled, non-white, or trans people and called such material lazy. She said she often boos at stand-up that punches down and rejected the plea to simply "have a good sense of humor," instead urging better standards. Prominent comedians like Dave Chappelle, Ricky Gervais and Bill Burr have used trans people as targets, prompting protests such as the 2021 Netflix employee walkout over The Closer. Other comedians have publicly opposed punching down. Dacus is publicly aligned with LGBTQ+ advocacy and performs marriages as an officiant.
