"Lufthansa Airlines will face a lawsuit brought by a gay couple that has accused an employee of outing them to the Saudi government. That was the ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Thursday, over whether a California federal district court has jurisdiction to hear the couple's lawsuit, centered on actions taken at the airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, prior to the couple flying to San Francisco. The appeals court said it does."
"The two men, one a U.S. citizen and the other a Saudi national, had lived in a "committed, but discreet" relationship for 33 years, and were married in California in 2013. The couple lived in Saudi Arabia most of the year, but flew back to San Francisco frequently. They were forced to keep their relationship and sexual orientation hidden, the lawsuit detailed, because homosexuality has been treated as a capital offense in Saudi Arabia."
A gay couple filed suit against Lufthansa alleging a staffer at Riyadh airport publicly harassed them, refused to accept their marriage, and outed them to Saudi authorities. The Ninth Circuit held that a California federal court has jurisdiction to hear the case concerning actions that occurred in Riyadh before a May 2021 flight to San Francisco. The two men had lived discreetly as a married couple for 33 years while residing mostly in Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality can carry extreme penalties. The couple booked Lufthansa expecting discretion and filed the lawsuit in 2024 after the alleged outing.
