"Anything rainbow like lanyards can get us fired on the spot,"
"This morning, he backtracked all of it and said flyers, lanyards, shirts, [and] banners associated with clinical care of LGBTQ vets are approved by central office."
"per executive order, you cannot have lanyards, rainbow magnets, [or] shirts ... and Central Office is coming"
Employees at the VA Hampton Medical Center were warned against wearing or displaying LGBTQ+ Pride-themed items, including rainbow lanyards and magnets. Internal messages link the guidance to a January 20 executive order that withdrew federal recognition of transgender people and prohibited federal agencies from "promoting" gender ideology. The warning reportedly came from local leadership the week of October 13, with interim executive director Michael W. Harper saying staff could not "promote" the LGBTQ+ community and then attempting to walk that back. Employees noted there was "nothing in writing" and that central office later approved clinical materials for LGBTQ veterans.
