During his speech at the Almedalen political festival, Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Akesson publicly apologized for his party's history, following an extensive report detailing its far-right origins. The 800-page document, authored by historian Tony Gustafsson, revealed connections to extremist movements. Akesson acknowledged the unsettling content of the report and expressed regret over the party's past perception, particularly among the Jewish community. He stated that the current party has set boundaries against antisemitism and emphasized the need to take responsibility for the party's historical actions.
"I deeply regret, and apologise, that my party at the time could be perceived as threatening and frightening for Jews in Sweden," he added.
"The Sweden Democrats of today, especially me, have to handle what we have inherited... I think we have done that, handled it and taken responsibility for it."
