Transport for London announced delays in the rollout of a new fleet of 54 air-conditioned trains for the DLR, originally scheduled for April 2024. The delays were caused by a signalling issue and the contractor going into administration. A reduced timetable has been implemented due to the age of existing trains, with some older units to be retired this summer. The new trains will enhance capacity by over 50%, offering improved amenities. DLR services between Stratford and Lewisham will be limited during peak hours while testing of the new fleet progresses.
"The new fleet, which has cost an estimated 942 million, was ordered to replace 33 of the oldest existing trains on the DLR network, some of which are over 30 years old."
"DLR services between Stratford and Lewisham will not run between 6.30am and 10am and 4pm and 7.30pm on Monday to Friday."
"The introduction of the 54 new trains will increase the capacity of the DLR network by more than 50%, with each new train offering 10% more space, air-conditioning, walk-through carriages, improved live travel information and mobile device charging points."
