Thames Gateway Bridge axed for good as land freed up for housing
Briefly

Land in East London, previously secured for the Thames Gateway Bridge, is now open for development. This bridge, proposed in the 1970s, intended to link Barking and Thamesmead but was fraught with challenges. Redesigns due to the proximity of London City Airport complicated plans, resulting in a smaller road bridge with added transportation links. Despite initial approval in 1985, public opposition and inquiries delayed progress, leading to the project's cancellation in 2008. The Department for Transport has lifted safeguarding restrictions, recognizing that London's transport needs have evolved.
Parts of East London that were previously blocked from development due to plans for the Thames Gateway Bridge can now be developed due to changes in transport demands.
While the Thames Gateway Bridge was proposed in the 1970s, the project faced numerous obstacles and ultimately was cancelled in 2008.
Although the bridge project was abandoned, the underlying need for better transport solutions in London remains, leading to the lifting of safeguarding restrictions.
