The recently opened Silvertown Tunnel has led to a significant reduction in vehicle traffic through the combined crossings of the Blackwall and Silvertown Tunnels, with Transport for London (TfL) reporting a decrease of 12,000 vehicles on typical weekdays. This new crossing, introduced with tolls, not only eases congestion but also provides an alternative route during disruptions, as evidenced by the recent closure of the Blackwall Tunnel. Additionally, bus usage has surged, with a 160% increase in passengers crossing the river via buses, highlighting the overall positive impact on public transport and traffic flow in the area.
Transport for London noted that the introduction of the new Silvertown Tunnel has not only reduced traffic volume through the Blackwall Tunnel but also contributed to a 12% overall cut in weekday traffic, easing congestion significantly across the crossings.
