An Old Pie & Mash Shop in Dalston Is Turning Into a Pub
"Opened in 1862, F. Cooke on Kingsland Road served up eels, pie, mash and liquor to the people of Dalston for over 130 years before it closed in 1996. Since then, the Grade II-listed building, with its marble counters, wooden benches and glazed tiles, has been home to Chinese restaurant Shanghai and board game cafe Draughts, and now it's becoming a pub."
"The Exale Brewing team, who have their own taproom in Walthamstow and run the Three Colts Tavern in Bethnal Green and William the Fourth in Leyton, are turning the building into the Black Eel. As well as a main bar space, the pub will also be home to a private karaoke room, a games area with darts and shuffleboard, relaxed lounge ares, private hire spaces, and a big beer garden, complete with a petanque court and covered seating."
A Grade II-listed Kingsland High Street building will reopen as The Black Eel pub on 24 October 2025. Exale Brewing will operate the venue, bringing a main bar, private karaoke room, games area with darts and shuffleboard, relaxed lounge spaces, private hire options, and a large beer garden with a petanque court and covered seating. Chef Billy Fisher will run Riley's, a Mediterranean-inspired kitchen offering dishes such as croquettes, mussels, pork ribs, beef flatbread and Basque cheesecake, plus Sunday roasts of beef, pork belly or celeriac. The venue will also be available for Christmas parties.
