Firefighters tackle ANOTHER blaze at problematic' Rainham landfill site

A significant fire broke out in Launders Lane on June 4, prompting swift action from control officers and around 25 firefighters. Crews from multiple fire stations battled hotspots on the impacted hectare, aided by a crew from Essex County Fire & Rescue with a high-tech turntable ladder. The Arnolds Field site has a troubling history, with over 100 fires reported in five years, invoking health concerns and local campaigns against poor land management. Recent soil tests revealed hazardous materials, intensifying community worries and prompting regulatory action from the Havering Council against the landowner.
Firefighters spent several hours extinguishing a number of hotspots across approximately one hectare of land.
The Arnolds Field site has caught fire more than 100 times in the past five years, sparking health and safety concerns for the surrounding community.
A soil analysis from November 2023 showed the land could contain asbestos, as well as plastic bags, crisp packets, bricks, cans, polystyrene and asphalt.
A crew from Essex Country Fire & Rescue Service were also in attendance, with a 32-metre turntable ladder used as a water and observation tower.
