New images show what a pedestrianised Soho could look like
"'Soho means so many things to so many people. This project is about reinforcing a sense of pride in the place where people live, work and enjoy themselves. We felt it was time to take a more cohesive approach to make the area better and more inclusive for everyone. It's fantastic to see support pouring in from local businesses and those that use 'The Village' on a daily basis.'"
"Lacey and Potter claim that pedestrianisation will help to reduce vehicle emissions, improve air quality and create more space for greenery in the area. They also argue that, as shown during the Soho Summer Street Festival, local businesses would benefit from the increased footfall. Under the plans, essential services like deliveries and street cleaning would still be allowed to happen between 7am and 11am, similar to the system in Chinatown."
Two architects, John Lacey and Russell Potter, have proposed permanent pedestrianisation of a portion of Soho, targeting Old Compton Street, Kingly Street and Greek Street. The proposal follows temporary car-free measures during the 2020–2021 Soho Summer Street Festival, when 17 streets were closed to encourage footfall and allow restaurants to serve while observing social distancing. The architects state that pedestrianisation would reduce vehicle emissions, improve air quality and create more space for greenery. The plans would permit essential services such as deliveries and street cleaning between 7am and 11am, mirroring Chinatown arrangements. Local business support and public backing have been cited.
