A first glimpse (and listen) inside Lacma's $720m new building
Briefly

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s new David Geffen Galleries opens for previews, allowing 1,000 visitors to explore its innovative design by architect Peter Zumthor. The building features 110,000 sq. ft of gallery space and is characterized by natural light flooding the interiors. For the preview, musician Kamasi Washington orchestrated a sonic experience with 100 jazz musicians performing in various sections. The juxtaposition of the building's concrete structure and the lively jazz, along with views of the adjacent Japanese Pavilion, creates a unique cultural atmosphere ahead of its full opening in April 2026.
The building was experienced by over 1,000 visitors during previews, who navigated its spacious concrete interior while listening to a 'sonic preview' by Kamasi Washington.
Architect Peter Zumthor's design features 110,000 sq. ft of gallery space and integrates natural light, contributing to an elevated cultural atmosphere.
The absence of art made the new structure feel hollow, as jazz music filled the space, sometimes harmonizing and other times clashing with the environment.
Visiting the Geffen Galleries offers stunning views and an interplay of architecture and nature, particularly highlighted by the adjacent Japanese Pavilion's organic design.
