Max Muncy of the Los Angeles Dodgers injured his knee during a game, leading to initial fears of a season-ending injury. General manager Brandon Gomes thought Muncy was done for the year. However, Muncy has since been given a six-week return timeframe and is nearing a comeback after three weeks. Muncy revealed he narrowly avoided surgery, as doctors indicated that a slight change in timing could have resulted in a longer recovery. The team has struggled offensively in his absence, averaging significantly fewer runs without him compared to when he was in the lineup.
General manager Brandon Gomes admitted he thought Muncy was out for the season. He said, 'From a coping mechanism in my head, it was like, OK, he's done for the year.'
Muncy revealed, 'If the timing was just a millisecond different either way, you're probably looking at surgery, and done for a long time.'
Muncy was hitting .304 with 12 home runs and an OPS of 1.009 over his last 47 games before his injury.
Since Muncy went down with the injury, the Dodgers have averaged just 3.36 runs per game, well below the nearly six runs per game they averaged with him in the lineup.
