In central Madrid, tens of thousands protested against Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's government over ongoing corruption allegations. The People's Party, leading the demonstrations, called for early elections under the slogan "Mafia or democracy". Attendance estimates varied, with organizers claiming 100,000 people participated. The unrest intensified following accusations against a former PSOE member involved in a smear campaign related to corruption investigations. Despite Sanchez’s government's assurances, the opposition is demanding accountability and a return to democratic processes, emphasizing the public's frustrations and desires for change in leadership.
Spain needs a revolution of decency and freedom and we will lead that revolution from the streets and at the ballot boxes, he told the crowd. Mr Sanchez, stop hiding, stop lying and stop running.
As demonstrators congregated in the midday heat of the Plaza de Espana, carrying placards bearing messages such as Sanchez traitor and Government resign, the PP's leader, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, renewed his call for a snap election.
