"When the Desert Breathes Again" by Photographer Gonzalo Palaveccino
"Beyond the dances, the shimmering costumes, and the devotion, I wanted to focus on what happens behind the scenes: the food stands, the sun-bleached colors, the improvised structures, and the objects left abandoned along the way. As a creative director, my practice has trained me to look beyond the main event and pay attention to context, detail, and what usually remains unseen."
"Because all of that is also part of the ritual. La Tirana is not just religion; it is a beautiful chaos where the sacred blends with the everyday, where faith coexists with fatigue, commerce, and routine."
Gonzalo Palavecino, a photographer and creative director, presents a behind-the-scenes perspective on La Tirana, northern Chile's largest religious festival held in July. After working internationally in Dubai and Chicago, Palavecino returned to Chile to collaborate with creative agency SORRYMOM on this project. Rather than capturing the main spectacle of thousands of pilgrims honoring the Virgin of Carmen, Palavecino deliberately focuses on overlooked details: food stands, sun-bleached colors, improvised structures, and abandoned objects. This approach reveals how a typically desolate town transforms during this intense, crowded period. The project emphasizes that La Tirana encompasses more than religious devotion and elaborate costumes; it represents a beautiful chaos where faith, fatigue, commerce, and routine coexist, with all elements contributing to the complete ritual experience.
