Santiago Espinal was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers after receiving sporadic playing time in the first 53 games. He appeared in 26 games, batting .220 with one home run and four RBIs in 41 at-bats. He played first base, second base, and third base, and also has experience at shortstop. Signed to a minor-league deal on February 21 after becoming a free agent, he earned a roster spot by hitting .378 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in spring training. His place on the 26-man roster disappeared when Enrique Hernández returned from elbow surgery. Espinal was acquired by Toronto in 2018, debuted in 2020, became an All-Star in 2022, was traded to Cincinnati in 2024, and later elected free agency in 2025. His career line is .260/.314/.633 with 21 home runs and 164 RBIs.
"Espinal was originally acquired by the Blue Jays on June 28, 2018, in exchange for Steve Pearce and cash considerations. Espinal made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays on July 25, 2020, and recorded his first career hit on July 28 against the Washington Nationals. Over parts of four seasons with the Blue Jays, Espinal batted .273 with 11 home runs and 99 RBIs and was named an All-Star during the 2022 season."
