Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman slams Yankees, says he'd rather 'retire' than play for New York
"No way. Not even dead. If I were told that I was being traded to New York, I'd pack my things and go home,"
"I'll retire right on the spot if that happens. I'm not crazy. Never again."
"I put up with a lot of things. I knew that they just wanted to find a way to get rid of me, but they didn't know how. And I just dealt with it quietly, kept playing, and doing what I always do. I got along well with all the players, never had a problem with anybody, even the manager. We're friends and we talk and everything. The bosses are the ones who make those decisions."
Aroldis Chapman serves as a late-inning reliever for the Boston Red Sox at age 37. Chapman spent parts of seven seasons with the New York Yankees but rejects any future return to that franchise and would choose retirement over a trade to New York. Chapman experienced disrespect from Yankees management while maintaining positive relationships with teammates and the manager. He recorded 153 saves, a 2.95 ERA, and 453 strikeouts over 294.1 innings with New York. Chapman was left off the 2022 ALDS roster after missing a mandatory workout. He pitched for the Royals, Rangers, and Pirates before signing a one-year Red Sox deal in December 2024 and is expected to be a key bullpen piece in 2026.
