Noelvi Marte is making his debut as a starting right fielder, marking the first time he has played outfield in his professional career. Previously, Marte primarily played third base in the majors and second base in the minors. The Reds are transitioning him to outfield for increased versatility and lineup flexibility. Outfield coach Collin Cowgill emphasized Marte's athleticism and arm strength as beneficial for right field, allowing more leeway in throwing accuracy compared to third base. This move aims to balance the lineup, especially against left-handed pitchers.
Cowgill noted that Marte's arm strength in particular makes him an asset in right field, creating more margin for error in throwing accuracy than how he found at third base.
Especially against a lefty, it gives us a chance to put Espinal at third and get all of our righties out there in the lineup.
