Tigers Outright Yoniel Curet, Zack Short
"The Tigers will now get to work with Curet without needing to carry him on the 40-man roster. He has a mid-90s fastball and showed big strikeout potential early in his minor league career. It seems likelier at this point that any MLB future is going to come out of the bullpen. Curet spent the first couple weeks of his time in the Detroit system at their Florida complex, presumably to work on his mechanics. He has only pitched once for Toledo and walked three of his six opponents."
The Tigers sent right-hander Yoniel Curet and infielder Short through outright waivers. Curet’s first career outright requires him to report to Triple-A Toledo. Detroit acquired Curet off waivers from Philadelphia in mid-April, and he has not yet pitched in the majors. He previously showed prospect promise in the Rays’ low minors, but a shoulder injury limited him and he struggled to throw strikes after returning. The Tigers can work with him without using a 40-man roster spot. Curet has a mid-90s fastball and strikeout potential, but early Toledo results include three walks in six opponents. Short, recently acquired in a cash deal, was designated for assignment after going 0-for-3 in two games and is weighing free agency versus assignment.
