David de Gea has declined to share details of his failed transfer to Real Madrid, stating he will do so after his football career. The transfer, which was close to completion in 2015, did not happen due to paperwork issues. De Gea expressed contentment with his time at Manchester United, where he won several titles before departing in 2023 after making 545 appearances. He took a sabbatical year that significantly benefited him, mentally and physically, stating that he only wanted to play for United throughout his career.
De Gea stated, "I will speak about all of that when my career is over. When things don't happen, it's for a reason. It was close but the transfer wasn't completed... Personally, it went well because Manchester is my home."
Reflecting on his sabbatical, De Gea remarked, "That sabbatical year did me a world of good, both mentally and physically: I was feeling a bit jaded. I felt it was the time to stop and come back stronger and it went well."
