Meta Brings Ads to WhatsApp
Briefly

WhatsApp announced it will begin displaying advertisements in its Updates tab, which is accessed by about 1.5 billion users daily. This marks a significant change since the app's founders initially opposed advertising. The decision comes as parent company Meta continues to seek new revenue streams. Users' personal chats will remain ad-free and protected by end-to-end encryption. Furthermore, WhatsApp plans to enable channels to charge subscriptions and allows businesses to promote their visibility to attract new users, enhancing overall monetization efforts without compromising user privacy.
WhatsApp's new ad feature will only appear in the Updates tab, preserving users' private messaging experience while providing Meta with a new revenue stream.
Despite WhatsApp's move toward monetization through advertising, the platform assures users that personal messages and calls will remain end-to-end encrypted and ad-free.
