"The Washington Post is taking a number of difficult but decisive actions today for our future, in what amounts to a significant restructuring across the company,"
"These steps are designed to strengthen our footing and sharpen our focus on delivering the distinctive journalism that sets The Post apart and, most importantly, engages our customers."
The Washington Post is laying off roughly one-third of its staff across the newsroom and other departments. The cuts include elimination of the sports department, closure of the books department, suspension of the Post Reports podcast, and a reduction in journalists stationed overseas. Executive editor Matt Murray announced the changes in a Zoom meeting with staff. Staff were told they would receive emails indicating whether their roles were eliminated. A Post spokesperson described the moves as a significant restructuring intended to strengthen footing, sharpen focus on distinctive journalism, and enable future growth and customer engagement.
